Episode 05 "A Very Braidy Podcast"

J's back! And what does that mean? It means we get to discuss potato chips and beer. Oh, and some video games too, I suppose.

Newsflash: J LOVES POINTS. Tune in to hear him talk about his misadventures with Avatar: The Last Airbender and Madden 06.

Though we've played a few demos and some Geometry Wars 2, this week is really all about Braid. With about 40 minutes of the podcast dedicated to one game, we discuss both gameplay and narrative. Don't want spoilers because you're going to play Braid soon? That's okay! We give fair warning in the course of the podcast for when we're going to discuss potential spoilers for the rest of the show.

Overview of the Club

How to Join
The Gamers Club strives to build a community of gamers around grounds through a balance of intellectual discussion and friendly competition. As our goal is to maximize inclusion, we do not charge dues or keep a strict member list. All meetings are open to anyone in the UVA community and we encourage everyone to participate in online discussion in our forums.

Meetings
The Gamers Club holds weekly meetings that are typically 2 hours long. The first half revolves around discussion, usually focusing on a specific topic. The second half is devoted to playing games which sometimes coincide with the meeting's theme, but members are free to bring whatever systems and titles they wish to play. You can view a list of previous meeting topics on the Meeting Topics page.

Challenge Days
Some meetings forgo the half discussion, half gaming format for a special Challenge Day. The whole 2 hours are devoted to a non-traditional tournament with a specific theme, whether it features games from a specific console, games from one genre, or something completely different, like the single-elimination "Gauntlet" or "Weird Games Challenge Day." For more information on challenges and champions past, head over to the Challenge Days page.

Trivia Days
For the last meeting of each semester, the club holds a Jeopardy-style contest, complete with prizes and food. Participants are divided into 3 to 4 teams and whichever team has the most points in the end gets first dibs on prizes. Final Jeopardy, where everyone responds individually, determines the order in which people in a team get to choose a prize. Typical categories include "Name That Video Game Tune," company-specific trivia, and questions related to the club itself.

Festivals
Since the first event on March 24, 2006, the Gamers Club has held Fall and Spring Gaming Festivals every year in the Newcomb South Meeting Room. Attractions include 8 gaming stations (7 TVs + 1 projector), several tournaments, and of course a huge space for you to talk games and play some handheld multiplayer. For more details, including pictures, promotional material, and tournament winners, click here and view the Festivals page.
