Episode 05 "A Very Braidy Podcast"

J's back! And what does that mean? It means we get to discuss potato chips and beer. Oh, and some video games too, I suppose.

Newsflash: J LOVES POINTS. Tune in to hear him talk about his misadventures with Avatar: The Last Airbender and Madden 06.

Though we've played a few demos and some Geometry Wars 2, this week is really all about Braid. With about 40 minutes of the podcast dedicated to one game, we discuss both gameplay and narrative. Don't want spoilers because you're going to play Braid soon? That's okay! We give fair warning in the course of the podcast for when we're going to discuss potential spoilers for the rest of the show.

How It Began

April 2003
Bobby: (Enters J's room first year after class) We should start a video game club next semester.
J: Yeah, that's a good idea. Let's fuckin' do it.

Gamers was founded in the Fall semester of 2003 by Bobby Schweizer and Jason Ford. The basis was the discussion transcribed in great detail above. Knowing that gaming is a big hobby among a large portion of the college community, they wanted find a way to get gamers together to discuss and play games. As laid out originally, the goals were to build a community of gamers who could share ideas, opinions, information, and their love of gaming. They also wanted to bring gaming related events to UVA including tournaments, festivals, speakers, as well as develop video game resources at the University.

Before even submiting for CIO status Bobby and J began collecting names of people interested in the club. Bobby even sat in the swealtering heat on the steps of the amphitheater with a Gamers sign and mailing list info because Gamers couldn't get a table at the Fall Activities Fair. But, once the CIO status was approved, and after some guerilla flyering tactics, Gamers had amassed over forty names of interested students. The first interest meeting was on "MONDAY 10/20 at 6 PM in CABELL 338" (according to an old e-mail Bobby found).
